A BEHANDING IN SPOKANE (A regional premiere) The cast, crew,& McDonagh too!
Bios:
Martin McDonagh, playwright, screenwriter, and filmmaker, was born on March 26, 1970 to Irish parents in Camberwell, London, England. He shares duel citizenship to Ireland and England. He and his brother, John Michael McDonagh grew up in England. When McDonagh was 14, he had saved enough money to see his first professional play; David Mamet’s AMERICAN BUFFALO. This play inspired McDonagh. Mamet became one of his idols, as well as Al Pacino (who was featured as the lead in AMERICAN BUFFALO). At the age of 16, McDonagh dropped out of his Roman Catholic School in London to pursue his dream of becoming a writer. He had assembled over 150 grotesque short stories that he had made up based off of life situations that he saw working odd jobs trying to make his way as a teenager.
McDonagh has no formal writing education, but in 1994 he began writing the Leenane Trilogy which earned him the Critics’ Circle Theatre Award of the Most Promising Playwright in 1996. Nearly all of McDonagh’s plays, with the exception of A BEHANDING IN SPOKANE are set in Ireland. He drives many of his themes from Irish idiom and culture.
His first six plays are located in and around County Galway. McDonagh and his brother spent their summers and holidays in County Galway, so he was heavily influenced the the culture and the landscape of the area. The Leenane Trilogy and The Aran Islands Trilogy were his first theatrical successes. The Leenane Trilogy includes THE BEAUTY QUEEN OF LEENANE, A SKULL IN CONNEMARA, and THE LONESOME WEST. The Aran Islands Trilogy includes THE CRIPPLE OF INISHMAAN, THE LIEUTENANT OF INISHMORE, and THE BANSHEE’S OF INISHEER. In 1997, The Leenane Trilogy along with the play THE CRIPPLE OF INISHMAAN were staged at The Royal Court Theatre and became the second playwright ever to have four plays produced simultaneously on the professional London stage. The first being William Shakespeare.
Other plays outside his two trilogies that he has written include THE PILLOWMAN and A BEHANDING IN SPOKANE. McDonagh has also written three feature films; SIX SHOOTER, IN BRUGES, and SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS.
He has been awarded the Drama Desk Award, Critics’ Circle Theatre Award, and Laurence Olivier Award. He was nominated for a Tony Award four times for best new play, however has never won. In film, McDonagh won an Academy Award for his short film SIX SHOOTER in 2005 and was nominated for best new screenplay for IN BRUGES in 2009. He has also won the British Independent Film Award for best British Film, as well as the BAFTA Award for Best Original Screenplay. Both for IN BRUGES.
Jared Greathouse
(Mervyn) Not only is Jared making
his sixth appearance on stage with The Hive, he has also served as Founder and
Artistic Director since the company’s conception in 2010. He has also performed
at a number of local SLC theatres, such as Wasatch, Pinnacle, Hale (WVC), The
OBT, and The Grand. Some of his favorite roles include Leon Trotsky (Variations
on the Death of Trotsky), Jerry (At Home at the Zoo), and Wilson (Harvey).
Jared was most recently noted for his critically hailed production, Who
Are You?; an experimentally absurd play which he wrote and directed
himself. He is now ecstatic to be sharing the stage with such a talented group
of dedicated artists. “Thank you all for sharing this experience with me.” His
next project is slated for October 2013: a self-written zombie comedy called Steadman
